Label Name

The name Seventh Ribbon Music carries three related meanings which together explain both the label and the work it produces.

Keepsake Ribbon

Ribbons have long been used as keepsakes. They were carried by sailors, frontier families, workers, migrants and soldiers who often had little else to leave behind except something personal. Long after the event itself had passed, the ribbon remained.

In early Australian families from England and Ireland, ribbons were tied to blessings, keepsakes and quiet symbols of continuity. They served as reminders of people, events and stories that mattered.

Music often performs much the same function. A song can transport a listener back to a place, a person, a challenge, a triumph or a particular season of life. Many of the songs released through Seventh Ribbon Music strive to do this.

Family Ribbon

I am the Seventh Ribbon in a family story that stretches from England and Ireland to Tasmania. On my father’s side, my first recorded family history begins with Mary Bresnehan of Tipperary and Limerick. Her son John was transported to Van Diemen’s Land for life after shooting at an English tax collector and operating an illegal still. On my mother’s side, the written history begins with Mary Butler, who arrived as a convict aboard the Lady Juliana with the Second Fleet.

A central theme running through my faith-adjacent work is the idea of soul inheritance. I believe that we inherit more from previous generations than physical characteristics. We also inherit soul traits shaped by faith, temperament, hardship, courage, mistakes, resilience and movement through life. As a songwriter, I acknowledge seven generations of soul inheritance carried through my ancestral lines. I am the Seventh Ribbon.

Thematic Ribbon

Seventh Ribbon Music produces Ribbon Collections, each built around a common theme explored through song and the written word.

Ribbon Collections can be built around any subject worthy of exploration through song and the written word. They emerge through observation, curiosity and movement. A topic captures my attention, reveals sufficient depth to explore and continues to hold my interest. When that happens, it often becomes the foundation for a new Ribbon Collection.

Each song within a Ribbon Collection is supported by reflections, thoughts, lessons and theories. Some collections remain primarily musical, while others evolve into hybrid collections that may include books, workshops, discussion guides, school resources, retreat material, parish programmes and other publishing formats. The ribbon remains the central thread connecting the collection.
